MINUTES FROM THE FISP CD MEETING IN MEXICO CITY, NOVEMBER 2010
The following letter has been sent, on letterhead with the names of all CD members at top, to the appropriate authorities of Keele University:
March 21, 2011
To Vice-Chancellor Foskett and other Administrators of Keele University:
On behalf of the Steering Committee of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP), whose members' names you can see above, I would like to register our strongest opposition to the proposal, which you are apparently considering right now, to liquidate the Philosophy Department of your university. We are all aware that universities in your country, as in some others, have been subjected to severe pressures to reduce their costs as a result of the economic hardships of the present time and governments' responses thereto. However, we find it shocking that the solution that has been proposed within the school in which the Philosophy Department is located is to eliminate that department entirely, and no other. We believe that this question needs to be re-thought, and the proposal withdrawn, in light of the central role played by philosophy throughout the history of your country in general, and in particular in light of the major role played by philosophers and the Philosophy Department in the much shorter, but still very significant, history of your university. Philosophers worldwide have been made aware of the crisis that has been created by this development, and we are hoping for a resolution of it that better conforms to the ideals of higher education and of the intellectual life (the open, integrated intellectual community to which your university declares itself to be dedicated) than does the present proposal.
Sincerely yours,
William L. McBride, President,
International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP)

An Invitation to International Conference
Values of the Human Person: Contemporary Challenges
Bucharest, Romania, June 3-4, 2011
The Faculty of Philosophy, The University of Bucharest
Bucharest, Romania
Times of changes provide special opportunities to discuss important philosophical issues. The aim of this conference is to focus attention on the values of the human person considered under the impact of the contemporary process of globalization. Paradoxically, continuous qualitative increase and diversification of knowledge cause more and more fragmentation in the human understanding of oneself and one's cultural and social environment. This threatens human civilization in new ways.
From this perspective new challenges are addressed to the humanities, knowledge and culture, arts, natural sciences, sociology. These call in turn for a diagnosis of classical, modern and postmodern models of theoretical, scientific, political and artistic thinking with regard to the main human values of the human being. The discussion of these issues will serve as a propedeutic to the 23rd World Congress of Philosophy in Athens, 2013, whose theme is "Philosophy as Inquiry and Way of Life".

Invitation to
Southeast Asian Biennial Conference
Cultural Traditions and Sustainable Development
Hanoi, Vietnam, July 7-8, 2011
Theme
This theme has itself evolved in three broad strokes. At first "development" was understood as an economic phenomenon. Second it was noted that as development projects could have relatively brief or even negative effect it was necessary to plan them with a view to their sustainability. Third the United Nations agencies discovered that a maj or indicat or of such sustainability was whether in the planning those to be effected were consulted so that their cultural traditions and expectations were taken into account.
All of this was brought together by the Indian scholar, Amartya Sen's thematization of development as freedom. This focuses on human capabilities as both processes and opportunities which enable people to do and be what they value. For this he was awarded a Nobel Prize.
These insights will be the central theme of the 2011 biannual conference of the Southeast Asian regional conference of the Council for Research in Values and Philosophy (www.crvp.org). They raise a number of specific issues such as:
- what should be considered authentic development,
- the conditions for its sustainability,
- their relation to cultural traditions as enabling and/or impeding
- the significance for this of intercultural relations in global times within Southeast Asia and of this with other world regions in terms of economics, politics and human dignity.
Papers are invited for summary, 30 minute, presentation and discussion. Authors are urged also to develop their argument fully for the volume of papers to be published after the conference, for which there are no page limits.
To register please forward the following information to Prof. Pham Van Duc, Director of the Institute of Philosophy, Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences (ducphilosophy@yahoo.com) and Mr. Tran Tuan Phong (ttphong59@yahoo.com.au).
Invitation
For many years philosophers of the Southeast Asian region have met to discuss themes of common concern. This has provided a unique opportunity for them to think through common issues and to develop the in-depth and mutual understanding between peoples required for our global times.
These meetings have been held throughout the region from Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur and from Jakarta to Phnom Penh. This year the Institute of Philosophy at Hanoi has offered to host the meeting and suggested among other possibilities the theme "Cultural Traditions and Sustainable Development". An initial sketch of some of the issues this involves is attached as an invitation to philosophers of the region to submit papers f or presentation, discussion and subsequent publication.
The conference will be held at Institute of Philosophy, in Hanoi on July 9-10, 2011. You are warmly invited to take part. To register please forward the following information to

The Organising Committee and the Academic Committee of ICOGPC reserve the right to accept or reject papers that do not comply with the academic standards of the Conference. (Conference participants are reminded that only manuscripts written in acceptable English or Greek will be considered for publication. If you have any doubt about the quality of your text in this regard, and in particular if you are not a native speaker of the language in which your paper was given, please be sure that it has been scrutinized by a native speaker of that language before sending it in).
All Papers presented at the Conference and selected for publication are copyrighted by the Organising Committee and ICGPC and cannot be republished without permission; the exclusive copyright of papers to be published belongs to ICOGPC, unless otherwise stated.
The official languages at the Conference will be Greek, English, French and German. However, due to the prohibitively high cost of simultaneous translation, only the first two of these languages will be simultaneously translated.
Greeks who present Papers are kindly asked to submit an acceptable English translation of the latest version of their Papers which will be read at the Conference. This should be submitted to the Conference Secretary one month before the opening of the Conference.

All participants (except Invited Speakers) should send the full texts of their Paper for presentation (two copies) to the Organising committee by 15th of June 2011.
All participants will be notified by e-mail regarding the category to which they have been assigned.
