Biography

João Carlos Salles is a full Professor of Philosophy at the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil, where he has taught since 1985. He has written many philosophical books and papers, mainly on Wittgenstein's work and, most recently, on Ernest Sosa's virtue epistemology. He has just published a book on deep (dis)agreements from Wittgenstein's point of view, and he is working on a book about Sosa's Dawning Light Epistemology.

Besides an intense academic career, he occupied several directive positions. He was for two terms (2002-2006) the president of the most important Brazilian national philosophical association, the ANPOF, and then, from 2013 to 2019, the president of the Interamerican Philosophical Society (SIF), having organized a huge international Congress in 2013, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. He was also the Rector of the Federal University of Bahia for two terms from 2014 to 2022. He is a member of the Academy of Letters of Bahia and the Academy of Sciences of Bahia.
